Latinx Photography in the United States: A Visual History was published by the University of Washington Press in 2021.
Profiling more than eighty Latinx photographers from the early history of the photographic medium to the present, this is the first book to offer a parallel history of photography, introducing readers to fine art photographers, photojournalists, and documentarians from throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. Ferrer provides rich historical and cultural contexts in discussing their legacies and contributions. Their powerful photographic art touches on family, identity, protest, borders, and other themes, including the experience of imigration and marginalization common to Latinx people. Tracing the rise of a Latinx consciousness in photography from the 1960s onward, Ferrer argues that in many cases, a shared sense of struggle and a deep sense of cultural affirmation has notivated and united these diverse photographers.
“Makes perfectly clear that we cannot understand the visual history of the United States without centering the work of Latinx photogrpahers. This essential resource should revolutionize how we teach art history.
